According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), an induced surface trough together with low-level convergence and some moisture advection across the Lesser Antilles, is expected to cause mixed conditions during this outlook period (Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th May, 2024). Sunshine and fair conditions are likely to be interrupted at times by cloudy patches, producing light or moderate showers over varying areas. There will exist a 10% to 20% chance for an isolated heavy shower to develop, especially during the afternoons and near hilly areas.
For this outlook period, Trinidad and Tobago is likely to initially experience generally fair conditions. Weak low-level convergence and moisture advection, mainly from the East and Northeast, is likely to produce patches of clouds, giving a light or moderate shower in a few areas. As the week progresses, by Thursday (16th May, 2024), there is expected to be an increase in atmospheric moisture encroaching from the Southeast. This, together with some low-level convergence, increases the probability (20% to 30%) for the development of a heavy shower in some areas, from Thursday (16th May, 2024) into Friday (17th May, 2024). According to present analysis, Friday (17th May, 2024) shows to be the day with the highest probability (30%) for the development of a heavy shower or thunderstorm, which would most likely be during the morning to early afternoon, favouring Western Trinidad, South and Southeast offshore areas, and hilly areas. The wind in the near-surface to mid-levels is expected to continue to be steady and moderate for this outlook period. It is possible for this to translate down to the surface at times, giving breezy to windy conditions, especially in the vicinity of any shower or in elevated areas. The Met Office notes that the present Saharan dust concentration in the atmosphere has been reduced to varying between moderate to mild, and is expected to continue like that for this outlook period. In the event of any bush or brush fires, landfill or forest fires, together with the Saharan dust, a further reduction in air quality is to be expected. Sensitive persons are advised to take the necessary precautions. Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS. [Source: TTT Live Online] An unprecedented, harsh, five-month Dry Season has shrunk Trinidad and Tobago's water supply by 35 million gallons a day, and the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has put emergency measures in place to ensure residents in the worst affected areas have a consistent water supply. This from the Ministry of Public Utilities in a Media Release today (Monday 13th May, 2024), following a Press Conference hosted by the Ministry and the Authority. According to the Ministry, “In addition to below-average rainfall activity, the impounded reservoirs of the Authority have also been negatively impacted by evaporation brought on by excessive heat, a clear effect of climate change. These adverse conditions have resulted in production deficits across the network of approximately 25% of surface source production in Trinidad and 43% in Tobago. Collectively, the supply deficit stands at approximately 35 imperial million gallons per day.”
